There have been strong debates around Physics of Fluids following some dissensions within the editorial board. However, having published there both before and after the conflicts in the board, I did not notice any major change in the quality of the journal. As an author I have received consistently high quality, demanding, detailed reviews when submitting manuscripts there, and my papers have been rejected / requested to be re-submitted if I did not manage to answer the reviewers comments (also in cases where I disagreed with the reviewer and believe their opinion was not justified, i.e. where there was a real disagreement). As a reviewer I have had the experience that the editor has been demanding on the authors and rejected their papers if they were not able to convincingly address criticisms.

It is true that the journal imposes a fast turnaround (typically 4 weeks to review and revise) compared with other fluid mechanics journals, however, I find this suitable, and it is possible to ask for extensions if needed. So I see this as a strength rather than a weakness - I am of the opinion that if a manuscript cannot be revised successfully within 4 weeks, then the changes needed are large and demanding enough that they require a careful re-assessment of the paper and re-submission anyways.

It is also true that I have seen "strong" editorial decisions, for example an editor initially asking for revision after generally positive reviews from 4 reviewers (who were positive but nonetheless asking for clarifications) decided for one of my manuscript to accept the paper without sending it back to the referees seeing our response. However, the editor was an expert on the topic, and the clarification points were clearly answered in the response, so I believe that the editor actually fulfilled his role, was perfectly suited for evaluating the manuscript and our response, and saved a lot of time to both the reviewers and ourselves as authors by taking his decision. So I view this as a positive point.

I do not believe that the comments that the articles published there have taken more of an experimental / data driven rather than heavily mathematical twist should count negatively for the assessment of this journal, as fluid mechanics is an experimental science and most realistic flows cannot be solved with pen and paper anyways, which requests using other numerical or experimental or data driven methods. If only journals taking a heavily mathematical viewpoint on fluid mechanics can be ranked to level 2, then a whole spectrum of perfectly valid and interesting scientific methods gets unfairly undervalued in my opinion.
