Scientific fields and scientific panels
When you register journals and series, you also must choose a scientific field for the journal or the series. The scientific fields are organised under the National Board of Scholarly Publishing (NPU).
The mission of the scientific panels
The scientific panels' main task is to nominate publication channels to level 2 and assess which publication channels that no longer should be at level 2. Even though level 2 are the main task, the scientific panels can be involved in the assessment of publication channels at level 1. The Norwegian Directorate for Higher Education and Skills and NPU might ask the scientific panels to assess publication channels when we are unsure about the publication channel’s professional quality.
The scientific panels will always be asked when we consider putting a publication channel under discussion (level X). We also involve them when the publication channel no longer should be under discussion (level X).
Classification into scientific fields
The classification of the scientific fields builds on the classification in Web of Science. A journal or a series can only be registered with one scientific field. This is because each scientific field has a scientific panel with competence on the scientific field.
Per today there are no scientific field across all subject areas. Interdisciplinary publication channels are usually classified under interdisciplinary natural sciences.
You will find an overview over the different scientific fields at the NPI webpage.
