Additional criteria for some publication channels
We evaluate certain publication channels based on some additional criteria due to the publication channels’ characteristics.
Last updated: 10. March 2025
Newly established publication channels
For newly established publication channels with a connection to Norway, we may in some cases approve the publication channels, even if they do not have
- An archive of the last two years' publications or backlist.
- At least two published volumes.
Professional journals
- Professional journals aimed at (not-academic) subject groups with specific professions or social sectors, will not be approved as academic publication channels.
- Norwegian and Nordic professional journals organized in peer-reviewed subdivisions can be approved as a academic publication channel.
- Journals from outside the Nordic countries cannot be approved, as it would be difficult to identify the status of the articles.
Journals
Journals aimed at a general audience with information and reflections about cultural and social questions and popular science, will not be approved as academic publication channels.
Series
- Publications in series may have both ISSN and ISBN.
- Series are considered as independent publication channels if they have their own ISSN.
- Series with ISSN must be suggested as new academic publication channels.
- When you register your publication in Cristin/NVA, you must use the ISSN-series as the publication channel, not the publisher.
- Even though the ISSN-series is not approved (level 0), you cannot use the publisher as the publication channel (see Reporting instructions).
- For contribution in series without ISSN, but with ISBN, you must use the publisher as the publication channel.
- You must suggest the publisher for approval at level 1 if the publisher is not already indexed in the publication channel.
- If the ISSN-series is not indexed in the Norwegian Register at the time you report your publication, the publisher can be used as the publication channel, if the publisher is indexed and approved in the Norwegian Register (see Reporting instructions).
Conferences and Conference proceedings
- Conferences cannot be registered as independent publication channels.
- If the conference proceedings are published in a series with ISSN, the series can be suggested as a new academic publication channel.
- If the conference proceedings are published only with ISBN, the publisher of the conference proceedings can be proposed as a new academic publication channel.
- When the conference does not have an ISSN-series and publish proceedings through the institutions that arrange the conference, the publisher may change from year to year. Such contributions will not count as academic publication.
Remember to check the criteria for level 1 and what you need to be aware of before you suggest a new publication channel.
