Maria Angeles Oviedo Garcia har identifisert en rekke tilfeller hvor peer-review-prosessen har vært tvilsom (se vedlagte oversikt). I disse eksemplene er det tydelig at peer-review-rapporter har blitt kopiert, forfattere ber om at deres artikler blir sitert og enkelte reviewrapporter er mistenkelig korte.

I en analyse av innhold av de uvanlig frasene "Data availability statement: Not applicable" og ”Data is contained within the article” scorer dette tidsskriftet svært høyt. Henholdvis 797 og 10801 artikler ble identifisert for å inneholde disse frasene under Data availability. Artiklene er publisert i perioden 2021-2023.

Flere av disse artiklene er riktignok oversiktsartikler, hvor slike fraser under Data availablity kan forsvares. Til tross for dette, er mange av de identifiserte artiklene originalartikler, hvor dette er uakseptabelet og direkte feil.

Publisering av et så stort antall artikler med disse uvanlige og uvitenskapelige frasene er mistenkelig og tyder på publisering av masseproduserte meningsløse artikler uten vitenskapelig innhold.

Videre operer dette tidsskriftet med en uvanlig kort godkjennelsestid for manuskripter som sendes inn. Fra innsendelse til godkjenning er det ikke uvanlig med 14-30 dager, noe som er svært uvanlig og mistenkelig. Med det enorme antallet artikler kan jeg ikke forstå at det er mulig å vurdere og kvalitetssikre artiklene som pøses ut i dette tidsskriftet.

Redaksjonen mangler tydeligvis den nødvendige kvalitetskontrollen for å drive et seriøst tidsskrift. Videre bryter de med prinsippet om åpenhet og at data skal være tilgjengelig.

Well, I am sorry to say, but I think it is not very scientific to state that 797 of 10801 articles had such phrases in the data availability statement and then not telling how many of those were actually review articles, where this would be absolutely acceptable. This is not a fair presentation of these numbers in my point of view.

Also, until there are no comparisons made to other journals regarding these parameters, how do you know that the number of such cases is particularly high for this particular journal? Also, in your next comment, you find 25 out of several thousand papers with an automated prediction algorithm with "tortured phrases" and you claim something based on that. How many it finds for other jounals, how is this significant in any sense? What are the accuracy measures of the algorithm that you use? I am sorry, but your claims do not seem to be statistically well-supported to me. Just empty numbers without any actual comparisons/analyses. Based on these one cannot judge if they are too high or too low since we do not know what would be an expected number based on the whole bulk of biomedical literature.

I also do not agree with the idea that a quality review procedure should take ages, often it takes half year, what for? Most reviewers do not actually spend more than a working day on reviewing an article, so why would it be desireable that the whole procedure then adds up to several months in a lot of journals (there is usually no real progress happening there most of the time, just empty days/weeks/months flying away when noone actually looks at the article!)? I think in our fast word such unreasonably long review procedures are definitely a drawback for science and not something to be praised.

You are also mentioning the number of special issues as a concern, but all those have different guest editors (scientists) assigned to them (which is somehow not mentioned in your comment). So it is definitely not a small group of people managing the whole review procedure of thousands of papers yearly.

Problematic Paper Screener har identifisert 25 artikler for innhold av meningsløst innhold ("tortured phrases") og/eller ikke-relevante referanser:

Innhold av denne sort er et tegn på at artiklene er fabrikkerte, og skulle vært fanget opp av redaksjonen og peer-review.

Disse artiklene ble publisert i perioden 2019-2021, og rapportert i 2022. Så vidt jeg kan se så har ikke tidsskriftet tatt noe initiativ for å gjennomgå disse sakene.

Tidsskriftet har i 2023 ikke mindre enn 4216 spesialutgaver (opp fra 1163 i 2022). Dette er svært bekymringsfullt, og jeg vil oppfordre HK-dir til å gjennomgå dette tidsskriftet.
