Levels and changes in levels
In the Norwegian Register, the publication channels are classified into different levels. Level 1 and level 2 means that the publication channels are recognised as approved academic publication channels. Level 0 means that the publication channel is not approved as academic publication channel.

What is an academic publication channel?
- A publication channel is journals, series, and publishers.
 - An academic publication channel is journals, series and publishers approved at level 1 or level 2 in the Norwegian Register for Scientific Journals, Series and Publishers.
 
Level 0 – not approved
- The publication channel is not recognized as an academic publication channel because one or more of the criteria are not fulfilled or documented.
 - Publications in the publication channel will not yield publication points.
 
Rules for changes in level
- New suggestions to publication channels that we do not approve will get level 0 immediately.
 - If the publication channel is downgraded from level 1 to level 0 will level 0 apply from next year.
 - For instance: If a publication channel is downgraded from level 1 to level 0 at the decision meeting in June or October 2024, level 0 will first apply from 2025. If a publication channel is downgraded from level 1 to level 0 at the decision meeting in January 2025, level 0 will apply from 2026.
 
Level 1 – approved as academic publication channel
- The publication channel is approved as an academic publication channel.
 - Publications in the publication channel can yield publication points.
 
Rules for changes in level
- New suggestions to publication channels that we approve, will get level 1 immediately.
 - This also counts for publication channels that have been at level 0 but are approved after a new suggestion.
 - The decision meeting in January: New suggestions to publication channels that we approve, will get level 1 for the previous year and onward.

Level 2 – approved as academic publication channel
- The publication channel is approved as an academic publication channel at the highest level.
 - Publications in the publication channel can yield publication points.
 
Rules for changes in level
- The publication channel must have level 1 before it can have level 2.
 - Level 2 has a delay in two years.
 - For instance: For publication channels that in 2024 was decided to be upgraded to level 2, level 2 will first take effect from 2026. The same goes for publication channels that are downgraded from level 2 to level 1. Level 1 will then first take effect in two years.
