Russian Literature er utvilsomt blant de ledende europeiske tidsskriftene innen tradisjonell forskning på russisk litteratur. Tidskriftet benyttes imidlertid ikke så hyppig av norske slavister. Dette, sammen med kritikk fra enkelte nordiske bidragsytere for uregelmessigheter i måten redaksjonen praktiserer sine fagfellevurderinger på, kan gi grunnlag for å revurdere tidsskriftets nivå 2-status.
Tidsskriftet ble foreslått til nivå 2 i 2019, og forslaget ble godkjent. Dvs. at tidsskriftet gir uttelling på nivå 2 fra 2021.
